When I first started CrossFit, I was 10 1/2 years old. I had become fairly inactive and turned to online gaming with some friends out-of-state to avoid getting bullied [About my weight]. I played baseball from ages 4 to 9 but after a game we would often go out to eat to celebrate and my food choices were awful! I loved fried chicken fingers! My family was more focused on healthy choices, but I didn’t understand it at all, until recently.
I found CrossFit and tried it with my family. The first-time walking in I was a little skeptical. Then I started to enjoy it. I was not totally committed, though, to going regularly and had not made the needed changes to my eating habits.
On April 14, 2016, I had a wakeup call, I weighed in at 166 pounds! I was only 12 years old and I felt awful. My highest weigh-in at a doctor’s appt. was 175. During that time, I watched my sister Elizabeth train hard and eat right and it worked. So, it was my turn!
In January of this year (2017), only 6.5 months ago, I decided I wanted to be in better shape and see my abs. I started working out more at CrossFit Lanier and became more active outside but, I also changed the way I was eating! In less than 1 year, I’m down 32-36 pounds [now weighing 130-132 lbs.] – but just as important- I went from wearing a 36″+ waist… to now wearing a 28″ waist!
CrossFit Lanier has become a second home for me. From the people to the experience… it has been great! Thanks to everyone in the CrossFit community, at CrossFit Lanier and my family for supporting me throughout my journey. I want to thank all the coaches for helping me and especially Coach Harvey, Coach Elizabeth and Coach/Owners Bruce and Louanne and everyone who has screamed for me to keep going when I felt like quitting! Thanks Mom for cooking!
Encouraging and helping others is where it’s at! The fun continues and I can’t wait to see new improvements!

2016 has been a “year-changer” for me mainly thanks to CrossFit! I was always intimidated by the whole “CrossFit thing” but decided to jump on the train. I was at my heaviest weight and was so depressed in my own skin. I needed a change so on Feb 3rd, the day before I turned 37, I started working out with a group of ladies of all shapes and sizes. Being consistent and sticking with the program I began to see and feel changes. I have always known that I’m some what stronger than most women but didn’t know how strong I really could get!! In the past, I would always try to arm wrestle anyone for fun but now I’m pretty sure I could give them a run for their money! Now that I’m officially a “Cross Fitter”, it’s not always about the pounds lost, it’s about the muscle gained. Never in my life have I felt as confident as I do now, especially in a 2-piece J. I still look at my body and see things I would change but I’m a different person now and it’s not all about the weight loss. Its changed my perspective of who I am. CrossFit Lanier is more than just a gym, it’s an amazing community for all shapes and sizes who treat you like family. There’s no turning back now.

I started working out at Crossfit Lanier in February 2016 with Coach Louanne’s 6 week, women’s only, challenge program. The first picture was me Feb 4th 2016. I was 155 lbs at just 5 foot tall. I was the heaviest I’ve ever been. I was drinking entirely too much, smoking, and just felt defeated. I decided to give this crossfit thing a chance since I knew there would be a coach to motivate me. After the 6 week challenge I had lost 15 lbs! Not only was Louanne great at challenging me, she also held me accountable (and still does)! I crossed over into full time crossfit! I once watched girls doing pull-ups and climbing ropes and felt like I was watching unicorns. I thought those were something I’d never be able to do! Here it is February 2017, I’m now 128 lbs, I no longer drink or smoke (Quite frankly doing CrossFit hungover, sucks!!) and I’m climbing ropes and doing pull-ups!! I’m doing things in my late 30’s that I couldn’t do in my high school days! My body looks better after 2 kids than it did before I had kids (minus a few scars and bad Tattoos) My life, my health, my body and my outlook have all changed! The coaches are all very encouraging and supportive, and the other members have become some of my closest friends! Thank you Crossfit Lanier!!!!

I’m not even sure where to begin. I had always been in shape, but after I had my daughter I let myself go. I was unhappy, the heaviest I had ever been, and I wanted a change. I felt like I couldn’t justify the cost of CrossFit, and that I could get myself back in shape at the big gym down the road, so I joined that big gym, met with a trainer once, who was so negative, and so discouraging, I literally never wanted to go back. In fact, I only went back two or three more times in the 3 months I had a membership.
By chance, I found CrossFit Lanier, made the commitment, and I haven’t ever looked back!!! I dropped two sizes in my first eight weeks, and dropped another size before I hit my 6-month mark. It took me six months at CrossFit Lanier to do what the trainer at the other gym told me I would do in a year. I’m now 10 months in, 25 pounds lighter, and have lost over 10% body fat.
CrossFit Lanier has truly been a lifestyle change for me. I have never in my life been more confident, and truly happy with myself than I am right now. It has been an incredible outlet for me, something that my husband and I can do together (he started coming after seeing the my results), and I absolutely 100% love that my little girl is growing up surrounded by such strong, positive people. The members are amazing, and it really is like a family. Everyone is cheering you on, and genuinely thrilled for you when you crush your goals. The coaches are personally invested and knowledgeable. The owners, Bruce and Louanne, are dedicated, willing, and able to help you change your life!
CrossFit Lanier is a topnotch facility. The equipment, the hours, the childcare, everything, is really tailored to meet the member’s needs. It’s truly been life changing, and I am so glad to be a member of the CrossFit Lanier family!
It has almost been 3 years since I joined CrossFit Lanier. As a Personal Trainer for over 30 years, I was mainly looking for someone else to think of my workouts, personally for me. I needed a change and needed a break from that part. I had already taken a dozen CrossFit workouts, in a couple different places, the year before. Nothing quite enticed me enough to make the commitment.
The initial “draw” to CrossFit is that it coincided with the way that I, personally, trained … and the way that I would train my clients. The similarity is that the workout was ever changing. Always train a different way. Add in something that will challenge your body differently. Throw yourself a curve ball! I would also do different sports, challenges, and cardio programs. Something new all the time. That is where my enticement to CrossFit started. The concept was similar …….. but, very different.
The CrossFit FAMILY, however, is the added bonus. I have tried to figure out why it works so well. How is it that everyone seems to FIT in? The young and the old. The fit and the not so fit. The bold and not so bold. How does that work? It’s the mentality that is born and nurtured through the owners. It also helps that the members of CrossFit Lanier are so very AWESOME!!! The idea of it all is magically contagious. Why? Because it is so very positive and everyone is genuinely pulling for each other to reach their goals.
Recently, I participated in my first CrossFit competition. I’m 60 years old. Who would have thought??! J Initially, I was disenchanted when I found out there was no one else in my age group. What? No other “grannies” wanted to compete at CrossFit? But, it really didn’t matter. What made the experience memorable, for me, was the feeling of support from the other CrossFit Lanier members, who were also competing … AND the CrossFit Lanier members who weren’t competing that day……whether they were there or not. It was awe-inspiring for me. I am a 6AM workout person. However, now I want to work out at various times so that I can also see the members who don’t get up before the sun rises! The “family” is continually growing. And I want to meet them. The place has become a natural magnet for some amazing people. OH! And don’t forget the teens. It is such a positive venue for young adults to be in. The teen program is absolutely superb.
The other things that are important to me, in a gym environment, is the quality of the equipment, hours of operation, cleanliness, and professionalism. Bruce and Louanne don’t seem to let things get by. The place is always clean. The equipment is always fixed and of high quality. They are open many hours of the day. Corners don’t seem to be cut. Since I have been here, there has been tremendous growth in all aspects of their business. They are always open to new ideas. And they are creative in their own right in regards to what they want their place to be. I have been in the fitness industry for over 30 years. And I can truly say that their efforts to building the best all-around CrossFit facility these past four years, in all categories, is extremely obvious. I am very proud to be a member of CrossFit Lanier.
CrossFit Lanier isn’t just some gym…
It’s a paradigm shift…
In how you think about working out, how you eat, how you live.
In how you see the other members as team members, as partners, as encouragers
In how you see the importance of the correct movement in an exercise
A shift in how you feel when you check your time
A shift in how much you think you can do
A shift in attitude and health.
Almost a year ago, I walked into CrossFit Lanier. I feel stronger, healthier, and more confident than ever (if that is even possible!). The trainers, Bruce and Louanne, are priceless. The “members” are more like family. And my wardrobe is in need of replacement… to two sizes smaller.
When my parents first suggested CrossFit for the off season, I thought they were crazy. I certainly wasn’t going to work out with them, and I lifted weights at school. They convinced me to go for just one class, and I realized that CrossFit was not a joke.
CrossFit is all about building explosive power in quick bursts and making your body work efficiently which is exactly what you need as a wrestler; quick, explosive energy. In wrestling, you don’t want to carry any extra weight that you don’t need. I found that CrossFit made me stronger and a little bigger, but I didn’t get bulky.
After I started at CrossFit Lanier, I found out that Mizzou wrestling, which is one of the top programs in the nation, does CrossFit-style training.
I’ve had a very successful season this year, and I think that be-sides hard work on the mat, my time at CrossFit Lanier helped me a lot.
– Hunter Loyd
17 year old Hunter finished 4th in sectionals last weekend, and just left for Macon to compete in the state championships. He’s currently ranked 7th in the state at 170 lbs. GO HUNTER!
I had always been an athlete growing up and played multiple sports, so I just thought I would always be in good shape. I did really well through college and maintained a great physique through my early 20’s. Then it happened…I got married and happy at 26 years old. Life was good, six years rolled by, and I woke up the Monday after the 4th of July 2014. The person I saw in the mirror was not the person that I thought I was. I weighed 215 lbs and realized I had to do something with my life. So I called a friend, Justin Barnett, who I heard was doing this crazy thing known as “CrossFit” and asked if I could go with him. I had tried going to the gym over the years and just wasn’t motivated enough to keep it up.
The first day I walked into CrossFit Lanier I was intimidated and doubted whether or not I would survive the day. My friend introduced me to Bruce and Louanne Henderson, the owners of the box. They walked me through the basic movements and the WOD (workout of the day), and I jumped into the fray. It was a tough core workout that I will never forget, and I was the very last person to finish. However, when everyone was done and I was still struggling to complete the workout, I looked up and there were all these people encouraging me to finish, including Bruce and Louanne. It pushed me through to the finish line. From that point forward I was hooked. I started going 4-5 times per week and I can honestly say that CrossFit Lanier has changed my life.
What started as a curious workout proposition with a friend has turned into an obsession to live a healthier lifestyle, and I could not have been shown this path without Bruce and Louanne.
I walked into the gym in July weighing 215 lbs and now, 3 months later, I am a much more comfortable 188…just 3 lbs more than my wedding day. I can’t wait to see the results after 6 months of joining CrossFit Lanier!

I started at CrossFit Lanier on Nov 1st 2013. My goal was to change my lifestyle for health reasons and to gain more energy throughout the day. My wife had been crossfitting at CrossFit Lanier for 6 months before I started and I’m not gonna lie, I was jealous of the way that CrossFit had changed her body and eating habits. I’m the kind of person that jumps into something head first and to most that know me I’m very competitive! I started at 207 lbs and I’m currently at 183 lbs. (in just 3 months!) The atmosphere at CrossFit Lanier is like nothing I have experienced! The friendships with the other members and wonderful coaches push me to be a better person. I can’t thank everyone at CrossFit Lanier enough for helping me through this transformation and look forward to what CrossFit has in store for my future!!!

Got a PR today in my Full Marathon time by 50min. The only training I have been doing for the last 7 months is CrossFit. No pounding the roads and killing my feet. Thanks Crossfit Lanier for kicking my butt everyday and making me a better runner. If you want to become a better runner go check out CrossFit Lanier.
So, 30 days ago I was full of excitement and hope. Ready to take on the biggest challenge of my life, The Whole30. I had read my binder put together by CrossFit Lanier, read lots of tips online, and attended a wonderful seminar to learn about the science behind the Whole30 and paleo. Ready to go! We can do this! My wife, Jennifer, and daughter, Skyler, on board; we will do this as a family. With the pantry and fridge cleaned out and a huge shopping trip to stock up on veggies, meat, coconut oil and nuts I was chomping at the bit to get started. We took measurements, did a hydrostatic body fat test and took before pictures. I knew I could eat clean, I was worried about cutting out my favorite drink, Red Bull, and my go to drinks at work (I work at Starbucks).
3..2..1..GO Day 0 I spent the day in the kitchen making breakfast and lunch for the next day. We decided to go all out and have burgers and fries for dinner. Unfortunately, with all of our new found knowledge the satisfaction was not there. I told everyone at work about the challenge and they helped me to stay strong and not have the drinks I wanted.
Week one was quite an adjustment! I would come home from work and cook dinner, then after we ate I cooked breakfast and lunch for the next day. I was getting out of the kitchen every night after 10pm only go fall asleep before my head hit the pillow! When I finally got a day off I spent all of it in the kitchen cooking as much as I could to try and break the cycle. I moved my laptop to the kitchen so I could quickly look at recipes from Thefoodie.com. My goal was to make interesting meals and to try not to repeat anything while making sure that all 3 of us would enjoy the food. Jennifer played a huge part in keeping the house together. She made sure the laundry and the dishes were done. I couldn’t have kept up with everything and kept my sanity! Besides getting used to living in the kitchen the hardest part of the first week was detoxing! I didn’t realize how much sugar I ate! And as expected my mantra became “Life without Red Bull is not worth living!” But I stayed strong driven by the knowledge that at the end of the 30 days I would see some amazing results!
Day 3 was really a milestone for Jennifer and I. We both realized that our clothes felt looser. We looked at each other in disbelief, it had only been 3 days that can’t be possible!!
Week 2 was much easier for us. We had figured out our new routines, I was able to get out of the kitchen by 9 most nights and the worst of the detoxing was over. I realized I had more energy because of the change of fuel I was giving my body. I was not passing out as soon as I hit the bed, when I got up in the mornings I was feeling awake and ready to go, WODs were easier and I wasn’t on the floor at the end of them. Also, none of us were taking antacids any more.
Week 3 got easier and harder. Cooking was easier because I was familiar enough with everything that I no longer needed recipes to guide me and I could start making things off the top of my head. This meant my kitchen time was reduced even more. The hard part was sticking to it! We had made it more than half way but the end still seemed so far away. The results had been amazing, so if we cheated once would it really hurt anything? We leaned on each other to get through those times of wanting to cave. I did have some moments of weakness this week. I broke down and had more than 2 servings of fruit. Not only did I feel guilty (never in my like would I think having too much fruit would make me feel guilty!!) but it made me realize what I put in my body really does affect my body. I had noticed my skin was clearer than it had been since childhood, and after my fruit consumption went up I started to break out again.
Week 4 was much like week 3. I was so sick of being in the kitchen I just wanted the whole thing to be over. We started talking about the end and how we would eat when it was over. Grain was out, this we knew! I still wanted Red Bull. Jennifer wanted milk and NOS. Skyler wanted Fanta and chocolate. It did get harder to stick to knowing we were so close to not being ‘forced’ to eat like this.
Day 30 – We went to the box for an evening WOD and on the way home stopped at a store to get Red Bull, Nos and Fanta for the next day. We did it!! Our clothes were falling off. We felt great. Why not have a little taste of what we had been missing.
Day 31 and beyond – Jennifer realized she didn’t like NOS any more. I woke up and went right for my Red Bull. First sip was amazing but I think that was all in my head. The rest of it just didn’t meet my super high expectations. After drinking it my stomach started to growl. I swore the whole 30 days I knew I was going back to Red Bull and I would have them on occasion, and I did try to. I had 4 that first week. One day I had my pre-Whole30 breakfast of a Red Bull and a Cheese Danish. This was the first grain I had. BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER!!!! I was working a long busy day and my breakfast put me into the worse most irritable mood I felt like I had ever been in. I was snapping at my partners and finding it hard to be nice to my customers. During the Whole30 I didn’t realize that my mood had changed, until that day. I knew then grain would never be a part of my diet again!! The next week I had 2 more Red Bull only to realize it made me feel gross and sluggish and drained. No more Red Bull for me! WHAT!?! Really I decided that! The Whole30 taught me to really be aware of what I put in my body and how it makes me feel.
I gained 3.6lbs of lean muscle. I lost 9.8lbs of fat. I lost 3.1% body fat
My baseline improved 44 seconds.
I lost .5” in my arm, I lost 2” in my chest, I lost 1.75” in my waist, I lost .75” in my hips and I lost 2.75” in my thigh.
The moral of the story! Stick with it and your will feel the reasons why you are doing it!
Thank you Bruce and Louanne for guiding my family and I to a better life. Without the CrossFit Lanier Family we would not be the people we are today.
– Melanie S.
In one month of working out at CrossFit Lanier I lost 8 pounds of fat, gained seven pounds of muscle, and my body fat percentage decreased by 5 percent!!! I could not be happier with the results I have gotten by working out with Bruce and Louanne. They are so passionate and knowledgeable about health and fitness, and they work well with any fitness level. Without Bruce’s knowledge of form, I would not be lifting the weight I am today or seeing the results that I have. Every time I have had an opportunity to measure change, I have made huge improvements in both my strength and my cardiovascular endurance. Bruce and Louanne have always been enthusiastic about working with me one-on-one to make me a better athlete. The environment they have created is friendly and positive, and all the people are great!!!
I started at CrossFit Lanier 2 months ago and it has been one of the best decisions in addition to one of the nicest things I have done for myself in some time. Friends of mine had encouraged me to go for months and I was dragging my feet because I was intimidated. Don’t make that mistake! Now I wish I had started when I was first told about CrossFit Lanier because my progress would be that much further along. Bruce and Louanne are very supportive and highly knowledgeable trainers. The low back and hip pain that I was nervous about aggravating is GONE and the 10 pounds of weight loss is an added bonus. Most importantly, I am doing activities that I never dreamed I could do and with that, my confidence has skyrocketed. Everything is scaled to YOUR level of fitness..so don’t worry..This program IS for YOU! Come see why I come here 5 times a week without hesitation. CrossFit Lanier ROCKS!
I had been doing CrossFit for almost a year already at another location when I stumbled into CrossFit Lanier. At first, I chose to switch only because it was closer to my home and it made my commute much easier. What I discovered was a welcoming group of people and great coaching. If you want a place that is encouraging and inclusive yet challenging at the same time, this is your gym. No matter where you are on the fitness scale, Coach Bruce will work with you and get you moving in the right direction. No need to be intimidated, this place is for everyone.
– Michael W.
CrossFit Lanier could not be a more encouraging workout environment. Bruce and Louanne make sure everyone’s form is correct and everyone is comfortable with the workout. After 3 months I have seen muscle definition form. Everyone is so nice too!!
I was going to your typical “Big Box” gym for over a year with minimal at best to no results when a friend of mine recommended CrossFit Lanier. What a positive change they have made. I’ve seen more results in 2 months than all the time at my previous gym. They stress form over anything else to prevent injuries. Additionally, my daughter loves the CrossFit Kids program and they will soon have their CrossFit Teen Certification for my other daughter. I would recommend CrossFit Lanier to anyone in the area that wants to improve their selves. They WILL see results faster than you would think is possible.
– Michael S.
CrossFit Lanier was the best decision of my life. At 55 I had done the gym thing too many times to say and was always bored out of my mind. When I joined I signed up for 3 times a week and within 2 months I was hooked. I switched to unlimited and now I am addicted. Bruce and Louanne are the best trainers. They ensure you are doing each movement correctly so you do not get injured and they inspire you to do the best you can do. They strive for you to do your best and get the most out of each workout.
They challenged us on a Paleo Whole 30 for the month of Sept and took the time to encouraged each of us along the way with helpful emails. As a result I lost 14 pounds and lost 12.25 inches. Group WODs on Saturday are a BLAST. CFL is not just a Box but also incorporates your overall health with a Chiropractor on staff as well as answering nutritional questions. All of these things make this Box OUTSTANDING but the best part are the friendships you develop and everyone encourages each other to do their best and are there for each other for encouragement and congratulations when the work out is completed. You may say “No way I will ever be able to do that” but when it is done and you are laying wiped out on the floor you can say “WOW I did do it”. I know I am stronger, happier but most of all I am healthier for joining CFL.
CrossFit Lanier is the place you want to be if you are just getting into physical fitness or if you are looking to take your sport to the next level. Bruce and Louanne are experienced CrossFit trainers, each with a very well rounded bag of tools. Every new client goes through a seven point movement evaluation, to be sure CF is safe for them as well as a free Baseline workout to see if CF workouts are right for the member as well. At CFL there is also an on staff Chiropractor and they will also help you with any nutritional questions or concerns. Best of all, the members are great, they are so friendly and helpful, if you give CrossFit Lanier a chance – you’ll love your results!
– Dr. Nova
Best place to workout in Cumming. Hands down! Bruce and Louanne are so well rounded and knowledgeable in everything CrossFit. They know exactly what they are doing, and they do it right. They also strive to get to know their members on an individual basis, and make them feel loved and important. Joining CFL was one of they best decisions I have ever made.
I stopped by on a Sunday when Bruce was cleaning the “box”. He talked to my wife & I for almost an hour and invited us back to watch on that following Monday. We signed up on that Tuesday and have loved it ever since. This place is great because everything is “scaled” to what your ability is and you are not expected to keep up with someone that is in 10x better shape than you. Also, Bruce will work with you on an individual basis so you can get proper forum on a particular movement. I would for sure, and have, recommend this box to anyone that is considering CrossFit!
